Why Working Harder Is Not Always the Answer: A QMDJ Perspective

Have you ever reached a point where you thought:

“I’ve already tried everything. Why is nothing working?”

So you work longer.

You make more calls.

You send more applications.

You invest more money.

You explain yourself again.

You push harder.

Yet somehow, the situation becomes even more difficult.

The natural conclusion is often:

“Maybe I’m still not trying hard enough.”

But that is not always the problem.

Sometimes, what needs to change is not the amount of effort.

It is the timing, direction or strategy behind that effort.

EFFORT AND EFFECTIVENESS ARE NOT THE SAME THING

Hard work matters.

But hard work applied in the wrong direction can simply make you tired faster.

Imagine trying to open a locked door.

If pushing does not work, pushing twice as hard may still not open it.

The better question is:

Should you push?

Should you pull?

Is there another entrance?

Or is this simply not the right time to enter?

This is one practical way to understand the value of strategic Chinese metaphysics such as Qi Men Dun Jia.

WHAT DOES QMDJ ACTUALLY HELP US LOOK AT?

Qi Men Dun Jia, commonly abbreviated as QMDJ, is traditionally used as a strategic system for assessing circumstances.

Rather than reducing every situation to “good” or “bad”, a proper analysis considers how different conditions interact.

At a simple public-facing level, this can be understood through three familiar ideas:

Timing — 天时

Environment and positioning — 地利

People and human factors — 人和

The important question is not simply:

“Will I win?”

A more useful question may be:

“What kind of situation am I entering, and what is the better way to respond?”

GOOD DOES NOT MEAN DO ANYTHING

One common misunderstanding about metaphysics is that a favourable indication means everything will automatically succeed.

It does not.

Good conditions still require appropriate action.

Imagine having good weather for sailing but travelling in the wrong direction.

The weather may be favourable, but your decision is still wrong.

Likewise, an unfavourable situation does not automatically mean you must surrender.

It may instead tell you to:

wait;

change your approach;

reduce unnecessary risk;

seek support;

change your positioning;

or choose a different timing.

The value lies in knowing how to respond to the conditions you are facing.

WHEN PUSHING HARDER CAN BECOME THE PROBLEM

Consider someone trying to close an important business deal.

The customer has become hesitant.

Instead of understanding why, the salesperson increases the pressure.

More messages.

More calls.

More discounts.

More urgency.

The intention is to save the deal.

But if the real issue is distrust or poor timing, greater pressure could make the customer withdraw completely.

In such a situation, “more action” is not necessarily “better action”.

Sometimes the smarter move is to stop pushing long enough to understand the situation.

THE SAME PRINCIPLE APPLIES TO LIFE

This does not apply only to business.

It can happen in:

career decisions;

relationships;

financial decisions;

negotiations;

business expansion;

important meetings;

major purchases;

and many other situations.

People naturally focus on what they can control — their effort.

But effort is only one part of a decision.

Sometimes you also need to ask:

Is this the right moment?

Am I approaching this from the right direction?

Who is actually influencing the situation?

What am I failing to notice?

Should I advance, wait, reposition or change strategy?

These questions create clarity before more energy is committed.

QMDJ IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR ACTION

Qi Men Dun Jia should not be used as an excuse to avoid responsibility.

It does not replace common sense, professional advice, preparation or real-world action.

Instead, its practical value lies in providing another structured perspective before an important decision is made.

The objective is not to become afraid of acting.

The objective is to act with greater awareness.

FROM “TRY HARDER” TO “ACT SMARTER”

When something is not working, there are times when greater persistence is exactly what you need.

But there are also times when continuing the same action only repeats the same problem.

Before asking:

“How can I try harder?”

It may be worth asking:

“What exactly am I dealing with?”

“What should I change?”

“And what is the most appropriate next move?”

Sometimes success does not require more force.

It requires greater clarity.
